Technology and Cognitive tools

This week’s resources and instructional DVD’s helped me understand about different ways to present the learning material to students. It was interesting to listen to Dr. Orey say teachers should present the material “using senses”, also using “informational images.” I like the idea of making them as real as possible, through power points, virtual field trips, pictures, or using any other resources available.

Chapters four and six of the book were very interesting. They present different ways to organize and summarize using word processing and other applications. It should help students’ process information, and organize their main ideas. These chapters also offer visual examples and class situations. All of these relate to cognitive learning because using a variety of methods will target different learning styles and make long time memories. I am truly learning and enjoying the material from the Web resources provided in the class book.

  1. I love the idea of making the experience as real as possible. I think this is a great way to get students more engaged as well as help them to retain them information in their long term memory rather than memorize then forget. Anyway teacher can get students engaged it is a great tool.

  2. Virtual field trips are something I also didn't know about. I'm really excited to use them with my students. I teach first and second graders, so it was nice to find something that is accessible to their age and computer knowledge. I also teach in a high poverty area where many of my students do not have real life experience with many of the topics we learn about. Virtual field trips would be a cost effective way to help them experience more and create memories that will last.

  3. Like you, I am enjoying the web resources from this class.
I'd like to share some of my thoughts on virtual fieldtrips, which I believe are efficient in several ways. First, they are very cost effective in a time when school budgets have been drasticaly reduced. Second, they make optimal use of time -- no time wasted for travel. Finally, you don't have to fight crowds or worry about organizing lunch for 60 fifth graders.

    I enjoyed reading your thoughts.
